Take Action: Potassium Bromate, a Common Food Additive is Linked to Cancer!

Potassium Bromate, a common food additive found in most breads and baked goods in this country, has now been linked to kidney, thyroid and other organ cancers. It’s banned in Brazil, the United Kingdom, Canada and the European Union, yet our FDA (Food and Drug Administration) hasn’t even looked at the studies or reviewed the chemical since 1973. That is inexcusable!

At least California requires products containing potassium bromate to carry a warning label, but no other state or agency has done anything to regulate this chemical in the absence of federal action. It’s outrageous!

Please help the Environmental Working Group fight for us! Congress is considering legislation that aims to break through the regulatory standstill. The Food Chemical Reassessment Act of 2021, introduced by Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.), would help bolster our food regulatory system, but it is at a standstill. If enacted, the bill would create an Office of Food Safety Assessment within the FDA to confirm that chemicals that entered the food supply chain through legal loopholes, or were reviewed by the FDA decades ago, are still safe to eat. The bill identifies 10 chemicals for immediate reassessment, including potassium bromate.

Let Congress know that you want these dangerous chemicals out of our food system, and to pass the Food Chemical Reassessment Act of 2021!
