iEat Green Shares Interview with Leah Penniman, Co-Founder of Soul Fire Farm and Author of “Farming While Black”

Hi All,

If you missed my interview with Leah Penniman, please listen to it below. Leah is not only the co-founder of Soul Fire Farm and author of the book, Farming While Black: Soul Fire Farm’s Practical Guide to Liberation on the Land , she is an inspirational leader in the movement for food and racial justice in this country! We discussed the history of farming in this nation, and how most of the land owned by black families was stolen, and never given back. We discussed the meaning of reparations, and the need for our country to come to terms with that, by passing the H.R.40 bill, which is a bill that would establish a commission to study and develop reparation proposals for African-Americans. This commission would examine how slavery and discrimination in the colonies and the United States from 1619 to the present has impacted communities of color, and recommend appropriate remedies.

We’ve all witnessed the disproportionate impact the pandemic has had on communities of color, and this is due to many factors, one of which being that essential workers are predominately Latinx and people of color, and they can’t afford to stay home from their jobs. A very poignant question Leah posed is, “Do we really value essential workers, or do we only value the essential work?”

We also discussed all of the wonderful programing that Soul Fire Farm offers, and how their goal is to teach and educate others, so that they can go into their communities, and change the local food system and make a difference. If you missed the interview, check it out below, and take a look at all of the cool programing on Soul Fire Farm’s website!
