iEat Green Interviews Two Farmers from “The New Farmers Almanac”, Marie Hoff from Capella Grazing Project and Sam Ryerson from Grass Nomads on PRN!

Hi Everyone,

It’s been a crazy week, trying to harvest my vegetables in between “Harvest Tastings” and the rain. Luckily, I have a great new cohort of interns, willing and able to work in the rain and be flexible with my schedule. We harvested Broccoli Raab, Chinese Cabbage, Baby Bok Choy, Lettuces of all kinds, Radishes, Beets, Swiss Chard, Collard Greens, Kale, Snow Peas, and Sugar Snap Peas. What a treat! Check out this Thursday’s recipe, using the tops of the radishes to make a delicious Radish Greens Pate!

My guests this week on the Progressive Radio Network are two ranchers from the book, The New Farmers Almanac. When I had asked the publishers of the book to recommend two farmers from the book for me to interview, I was surprised when they recommended two ranchers. I had never interviewed a farmer that focused on livestock before, and I thought it would be really interesting to hear their perspective on diversification, caring for the land, our broken food system, and how we can save the natural world.

Marie Hoff is the founder of Capella Grazing Project which integrates heritage breed Ouessant sheep with landscapes in need of the service of grazing. Vineyards, orchards, and private property seeking fire prevention and brush management will use the sheep to provide weed control and fertilization for the crops and pastureland. Capella Grazing has since folded in with Marie’s next project, Full Circle Wool.  Full Circle Wool sources coarse wool from Climate Beneficial ranchers in California, and sells it as batting and felt products to the public and retailers, serving as a link between regenerative agriculture and consumers.  Marie continues to run her Ouessant sheep, and rents their services to properties looking for grazing at particular times of year.  Committed to a healthy future, Full Circle Wool works to connect people with the land they inhabit in a deep, meaningful, and nourishing way.

My other guest is Sam Ryerson, who is currently managing cattle grazing on two ranches in southern Montana, with his partner, Ariel Greenwood. They are co-owners of Grass Nomads LLC, a grazing company. They are running some of their own yearling heifers, as well as taking care of 3,000 more yearlings. Sam is also a partner in a cattle company based in New Mexico called Triangle P Cattle Co. He spends his winter there, leasing range lands to run mother cows and calves and yearling cattle. All of the cattle under their management graze outside on rangelands. Sam has been working on ranches throughout the West since 2005 and serves on the board of directors of the Quivira Coalition, the Southwest Grass-fed Livestock Alliance, and Contra Viento Journal.

Both of these ranchers contributed great stories to The New Farmers Almanac, and I look forward to sharing those stories with you. I hope you can join us!
