Take Action: Tell the USDA’s National Organic Standards Board to Remove Non-Organic Celery Powder from Organic Foods!

Remove Known Carcinogens from Organic

Did you know that non-organic celery powder can do the same thing as nitrates and nitrites?  It’s true! By amping up applications of synthetic nitrogen fertilizer, celery can have the same functional and biological impact as synthetic nitrates and nitrates, and act as a meat preservative. Nitrates and nitrites, when in contact with protein, react to create nitrosamines, which are widely considered to be possible carcinogens. The World Health Organization considers processed meat “a known carcinogen.”

Those who care about the integrity of organic foods, want our help in convincing the USDA’s National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) to remove non-organic celery powder from the National List of Allowed and Prohibited Substances for use in organic food production.
