Take Action: Tell Congress to Pass the “Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act”! Mandate Water Utilities Test for Toxic Chemicals!

A few weeks ago, I asked you to sign a petition, asking these corporate giants to address the plastic pollution crisis at their upcoming shareholder meetings. Well, needless to say, they didn’t! Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, and Nestlé could have chosen to be role models in curbing their dependency on single use plastic, but instead, they chose to ignore the problem.

Therefore, we need to push Congress to hold these big plastic polluting corporations accountable for the plastic crisis. The newly reintroduced Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act is a comprehensive federal legislation that would begin to phase out throwaway plastics made from fossil fuels, hold the plastic industry responsible for its waste, and pause construction on any new plastic-making plants.

The Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act of 2021 will address the plastic pollution crisis and protect our communities and wildlife to create a healthier, more equitable future for us all by:

  • Shifting responsibility for waste management and recycling to manufacturers and producers
  • Setting up a national beverage container refund program
  • Establishing minimum recycled content standards
  • Phasing out certain single-use plastic products that aren’t recyclable
  • Prohibit plastic waste from being exported to developing countries
  • Placing a moratorium on new and expanding plastic facilities until the Environmental Protection Agency updates and creates vital environmental and health regulations on those facilities.

Message your members of Congress and ask them to co-sponsor the Break Free from Plastic Pollution Act of 2021 today.

Mandate Water Utilities Test for Toxic Chemicals!

I was surprised to read that more than 2 million New Yorker’s across the state don’t know if their water is contaminated with cancer-causing chemicals. I know water utility companies test their water regularly, but not necessarily for the cancer causing chemicals that they need to. The NY Senate just passed a bill to mandate the testing, but now it has to pass the Assembly. Please send a message to your Assembly person!
