Take Action: Tell Companies: Stop Serving Kids Dessert for Breakfast!

School lunch programs across the country have expanded to include breakfast, but the breakfast they are serving is full of sugar, corn syrup, artificial color and flavor. Millions of kids rely on school meals as their primary source of healthy food, but many breakfast products served at school — like Lucky Charms, Pop-Tarts, Marshmallow Mateys, and Ultimate Breakfast Rounds — have as much added sugars as desserts. They are anything but healthy! Even the “whole grain” french toast or pancakes are ruined, when they serve it with the artificially flavored and colored pancake syrup.

A box of Lucky Charms cereal has as much added sugar as a Hostess CupCake and a twin pack of Pop-Tarts Frosted Cinnamon Made with Whole Grain has more added sugars than six Oreo cookies. I never even heard of  Ultimate Breakfast Rounds until school breakfasts, but when I looked it up, it’s advertised as “a hearty and great tasting 2.5 oz chewy round breakfast/snack item made with 100 whole grain, zero trans fat, and with a good source of fiber. Cinnamon and Brown Sugar flavor” but it has more added sugars than a Nestle Ice Cream Vanilla Sandwich.

We can do better, and we MUST!!
