Tell the EPA: Stop the Toxic Chemicals That Have Replaced BPA

In 2008, consumers across the country were outraged that EPA was allowing the cancer-causing, endocrine disruptor BPA in kids? toys. Thanks to the public outcry, plastic containers offer BPA-free alternatives. Unfortunately, that victory isn?t looking so great anymore. New studies have found that many of those “BPA-free” plastics contain other chemicals that are just as bad — or worse — than BPA. These replacement chemicals not only affect brain and organ development in children, but could even reprogram your cells to cause diseases generations down the line. Our outdated 1976 Toxic Substances Control Act is partially to blame, since it has our safety standards backwards by presuming that chemicals are safe until proven otherwise. As a result, more than 80,000 chemicals are approved for use but have never been tested for their effects on our health. The EPA can step in right now and ensure that chemical companies can?t keep swapping one toxic chemical for another. One of the rules the EPA withdrew two years ago would have closed a major loophole that lets companies keep the results of their health and safety studies private by claiming they contain ?confidential business information.? That information needs to be public so that the EPA can begin to evaluate which chemicals are safe and which need to be regulated or removed from the market. Tell the EPA: Don?t let chemical companies put toxins in the plastics our families use.

Demand Study of Risks from Crude Oil Transport

A “virtual pipeline” has been created in New York State to transport millions of gallons of crude oil per day by railroad car and river vessel without any study of its potential for environmental Screen Shot 2014-05-13 at 3.45.36 PMimpacts and threats to public health and safety. The risk of catastrophic crude oil fires and spills has been proven to be real after repeated accidents elsewhere on the “virtual pipeline”?including a deadly spill in Lac-Megantic, Quebec, in July 2013, which killed 47 people and leveled several blocks of the town.? Near-misses have already occurred in New York State?including the December 2012 grounding of the Stena Primorsk tanker in the Hudson River, the November 2013 crash of an oil train with a truck at an at-grade crossing in West Nyack, and the December 2013 derailment of an oil train in Cheektowaga. Help protect the Hudson River and communities along the rail line by urging the Department of Environmental Conservation to fully study the risks of the “virtual pipeline” by performing a complete environmental impact review of all relevant pending and previously granted permits.
