Hi Everyone,

As a member of the Long Island Food Coalition, I am excited to invite you all to join us at the  next Long Island Food Conference, scheduled for November 3rd at Long Island University @ Post. Frances Moore Lappé, author of Diet for a Small Planet and co-founder of the Small Planet Institute will be our keynote speaker. It is a full day event, starting with a Farmers Market and a breakfast of Steel Cut Oats and Fruit! We have two panels scheduled for the morning, Food Policy and Justice, with Tom Colicchio and Karen Washington, followed by a panel on Food and Climate Change, with representatives from Food and Water Watch, NOFA-NY and Feedback. A plant based catered lunch will be served to all, with time to visit exhibitor booths and our onsite book store! In the afternoon, we have two more panels scheduled. The first one is Food as Medicine, with Dr. Robert Graham from FreshMed, Ellen Kamhi, The Natural Nurse, and Sally Fallon Morelle, from The Weston Price Foundation. The last panel is on Growing Food, where we have Fred Lee from Sang Lee Farms, Michael Doall from Montauk Shellfish Co, Fran Whittelsey from Gateway Community Garden and Stefan Oberman from Aero Farms. We will end the day with a little wine and cheese reception, and reflect on all of the wonderful inspiration that the day offered us. Space is limited, so get your tickets early, during the early bird pricing!

In case you missed it, Wendell Berry had a great opinion piece in the NY Times, talking about small farms and the Farm Bill. As in the past, this year’s proposed Farm Bill does nothing to encourage young beginning farmers, or to promote local farmers markets or local food production. It still has the subsidies and crop insurance in place that awards millions of dollars to wealthy agribusiness’s and factory farms, but cuts funds for important conservation and stewardship programs. It also cuts funding for the SNAP program, (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) which provides much needed support, in the form of food, to many low income people. We need a Farm Bill that addresses the problem of soil erosion, soil degradation, the pollution of waterways by toxic chemical runoff, the inhumane treatment of animals, the overuse of antibiotics, various ecological damages, and the failure of small farms and the consequences that brings to rural America and communities. Unfortunately, that certainly doesn’t look like that is going to happen anytime soon!

My guest this week on the Progressive Radio Network is Dana Cohen, MD. Dana is a nationally renowned internal and integrative medicine specialist, whose multi-disciplinary approach has helped treat thousands of patients using a variety of conventional and complementary therapies. I have invited her on to talk about her new book, “Quench: Beat Fatigue, Drop Weight, and Heal Your Body Through the New Science of Optimum Hydration” (Hachette Books, 2018).  I know when we think of hydration, we think of water, but Dr. Dana Cohen suggests we eat our water through foods, rather than drinking it!  Dr. Cohen has been in practice for nearly two decades, and trained under the late Dr. Robert Atkins, author of the iconic, “Dr. Atkins’ New Diet Revolution,” and Dr. Ronald L. Hoffman, a pioneer of integrative medicine and founder of the Hoffman Center in New York City.

Cohen was certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in 1998, and was appointed to the Board of Directors of the American College for the Advancement of Medicine (ACAM), the leading voice of integrative medicine for more than 1,500 MD, DO, ND and master-level health care providers, and served as advisor to the board of directors and adviser to the education committee. Cohen earned her medical degree from St. George’s University School of Medicine and completed a three-year internal medicine residency at Albany Medical Center. She has on-air experience as a radio host and previously co-hosted, “Healthy for Good,” radio show that aired in New York City and “New Vitality Live,” a nationally syndicated show on WOR Radio Network.

Please join me on Thursday as we discuss Dr. Cohen’s new book and the research behind eating your water instead of drinking it, and the many benefits we will gain by following her advise.
