NOFA-NY Begins Project to Transition Long Island Farmland to Organic!!

NOFA-NY is excited to be launching a new initiative as part of our education and outreach programming:  The Long Island Organic Transition Program.

NOFA-NY will be offering technical support, farmer-to-farmer mentorship, and cost share assistance to help farms on Long Island become certified organic.

To coordinate this effort, NOFA-NY welcomes Organic Transition Educator Whitney Beaman to our team. Whitney holds a B.S. in Viticulture and Enology from Cornell University and an M.S. in Sustainability Management from Columbia University. She has eight years of experience in the Long Island wine industry and most recently served as the Program Manager of Long Island Sustainable Winegrowing. Whitney lives in Greenport and is an avid gardener, aspiring farmer, and dog mom of two Labradors.

Program recruitment will begin later this winter – if you are a farmer or partner organization interested in receiving updates on this project, please send an email to Whitney at wbeaman@nofany.org.

Climate Leadership in Action!

Last week, President Biden signed a series of executive orders that will mobilize all of government to clean up pollution in frontline communities, tackle the climate emergency, and address the biodiversity crisis by protecting public lands which provide habitat for imperiled wildlife.
Among the orders was an immediate pause to future federal fossil fuel leasing on public lands. Currently, federal fossil fuel activities contribute to nearly 25% of U.S. emissions, so this pause is a critical step toward transforming public lands from being part of the climate problem to part of the solution. President Biden also signed orders committing to investing in communities of color that are disproportionately harmed by pollution, and centering justice and equity in decision-making.  President Biden recognizes the existential threat of our Climate Crisis and has put our country on a path towards addressing these problems.
