iEat Green Welcomes Spring and My Garden! Roxanne Zimmer, Master Gardener, Joins Bhavani on the Progressive Radio Network!

Hi Everyone,

Emi and Leia helping with the garden

What a beautiful week we are having. It finally feels like Spring has arrived. I spent a good part of the weekend waking up my garden, removing the straw that had tucked it in for the long Winter, and protected it from the cold and wind. I pulled out the hoses, turned the compost, and began the long process of weeding the garden.  It felt so good to have my hands in the earth. I barely made a dent in everything that needs to get done before the seeds go in the ground, but it felt so good!  If you want to lend a hand, please reach out to me.

I look forward to gathering again, working in the garden, growing beautiful food, and sharing delicious meals with my family, friends and community. Stay healthy!

Roxanne Zimmer, Ph.D., a Master Gardner and Community Horticulturalist at Cornell Cooperative Extension Joins Bhavani on PRN!

Roxanne Zimmer, Ph.D., has been spreading the word about best garden practices for many years. In her Community Horticulture role at Cornell Cooperative Extension in Suffolk County, Roxanne speaks to school and community groups about why we should be reducing lawn area, planting native plants and growing more vegetables. She offers Master Gardener Training Classes and a Spring Gardening School every year. A recent initiative is the Seed to Supper program which teaches those in greatest need how to increase their food security.

Roxanne has offered a SUNY Stonybrook course on global food issues. As part of a Canadian delegation of farmers, she examined food security in Cuba. She has presented at national conferences of the American Horticultural Society and the American Community Garden Association.

When not weeding, Roxanne can be found raising oysters with the Cornell Marine program.

Please join the conversation on Thursday, as we talk about best garden practices, mentoring gardeners, and food security.
