iEat Green Shares Interview with Malik Yakini, Executive Director of the Detroit Black Community Food Security Network

Hi All,

This past Thursday, I had the pleasure of catching up with Malik Yakini, the Executive Director of the Detroit Black Community Food Security Network (DBCFSN). Prior to this interview, Malik had joined me on my radio show back in 2011, and it was really nice to see all the work he has been involved with since. The Detroit Black Community Food Security Network (DBCFSN) operates D-Town Farm, a seven-acre farm in Detroit that grows more than 30 different fruits, vegetables and herbs. They are working with the Detroit’s Food Security Council, the Food Policy Council and other grassroots organizations to improve access to better food. While many of us have heard about the revitalization going on in Detroit, I was disturbed, yet not surprised, to hear that the opportunities that we have been hearing about, are not making there way into the communities of color, which makes up 80% of Detroit.  As Malik explains, capitalism doesn’t work if you don’t have money! In order to borrow money to start a new business or to purchase a home, you need to already have money or the banks won’t lend to you. It’s another catch 22! The trickle down theory is not working!

To better understand the situation, please listen to our interview below.
