iEat Green Shares Interview with Jaclyn Rutigliano, Co-Founder of Hometown Flower Collective

Hi Everyone,

I had an awesome interview last week with Jaclyn Rutigliano, the co-founder of Hometown Flower Collective, and host of Slow Food North Shore’s upcoming “Flower in a Bag” workshop on June 17th! The Slow Flower Movement follows the same principles as Slow Food, “good, clean and fair”, meaning that the flowers are grown in their natural habitat, free of pesticides and herbicides, and both the farmer and farm workers are are treated with respect and are paid a fair, living wage.

I had no idea that 70% of all the flowers that florists use are imported.  In order for flowers to come into this country, they need to be doused with a hefty dose of “Round-Up” to kill and prevent any living organisms from coming into this country. She believes this also contributes to the lack of smell that most imported flowers have.

If you want to support florists using local, seasonal flowers, check out the Slow Flower Movement!
