iEat Green is Looking for Garden Interns for the Growing Season; Melissa Nelson, Native Ecologist and President of The Cultural Conservancy Joins Bhavani on PRN!

Hi Everyone,

I hope you are all enjoying the taste of Spring and getting back out into your gardens. It’s always overwhelming when I first start clearing away the debris and weeds that have managed to survive the Winter, to make room for my planting, but once I get started, it’s hard to stop! I have some seeds germinating in the house, and I’m planting my early Spring vegetables right into the soil, like Sugar Snap Peas, Snow Peas, Arugula, Spinach and Kale. I can’t wait to eat my first Spring salad from the garden. There is nothing like it!

If you are interested in learning about organic gardening and how to take those vegetables and create delicious vegan dishes, then reach out to me about interning this growing season. I usually take on 2-3 interns, and coordinate the hours to work around other committments and the weather. If interested, please reach out to me at Bhavani@iEatGreen.com.

My guest this week is Melissa K. Nelson (Turtle Mountain Chippewa.) Melissa is an ecologist, media-maker and scholar-activist. She is a professor of Indigenous Sustainability in the School of Sustainability at Arizona State University (ASU). Before joining ASU, she served as a professor of American Indian Studies at San Francisco State University (2002-2020). She is a transdisciplinary and community-based scholar dedicated to Indigenous rights and sustainable lifeways. Melissa advocates for Indigenous Peoples in higher education, nonprofits, and philanthropy, and focuses on food sovereignty and land stewardship. Melissa is president and long-term leader of The Cultural Conservancy.

I first learned of Melissa’s work when she joined the panel discussion following the screening of Sanjay Rawal’s film, Gather, and I knew right then, that I wanted to bring her wisdom to my listeners. I hope you can join us for a great conversation about indigenous rights, and how it pertains to human rights, environmental rights and food justice issues.
