An Interview with Leslie Cerier, Natural Foods Chef and Cookbook Author

Hi Everyone,

This was one of the weirdest Memorial Day holidays I can remember. I actually had to pull out my winter coat again, to participate in the March Against Monsanto on Saturday. As I was driving in to New York from Long Island, I kept thinking about turning around, because the weather was so miserable! It was raining and 50 degrees outside. Then I realized, if people like me failed to commit

6.sibecause of bad weather, then who would show up? I was so glad I persevered! When I got there, there were only a few hundred people, but within an hour, there were thousands of people! Yes, thousands of people chanting “Say No, to GMO’s” or “Hell No! We don’t want your GMO!” After about an hour of speakers, we all marched to Washington Square Park, where the gathering continued with music, drum circles, free vegan food provided by Long Island’s, Food Not Bombs, and small “teach in’s” where people broke up into small group info sessions and discussions. It was a very powerful day! And what added to it’s power, was knowing that this was going on simultaneously in 52 countries around the world, 436 cities, and with over 2 million people marching. Now that is big news!! Wouldn’t you think it would get some press? Over 2 thousand people in New York City take to the streets, but not one newspaper wrote an article on the March Against Monsanto! Not one! The only mention of the march in the New York Times was in an article the

IMG_1229following day, titled, Seeking Food Ingredients That Aren?t Gene-Altered. For me, this is a perfect example of the influence large corporations have on our Newspapers. Whether it is out of fear, or because they would lose large amounts money and corporate sponsors , newspapers continuously don’t report on events like this. They barely reported on the “Forward on Climate Rally” that took place in Washington DC in February,? to raise awareness about climate change and to protest the Keystone XL Pipeline, that had thousands of people marching in the freezing cold! It makes you realize that you need to look to other places for your news coverage, like Democracy Now, Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Huffington Post, Eco-Watch, or http://theanti-media.org. It’s infuriating!!
