An Interview with Bryant Terry, Chef & Author of “Afro-Vegan”

Hi Everyone,

Two weekends in a row, I worked outside on my property, but still didn’t finish preparing the soil in my vegetable garden. It needs barrels of compost before I can plant my seeds, so I decided to start my seeds indoors. I know its not ideal, and I know I am late, but at least they are started!? Sometimes, I just can’t get to everything! In a few weeks, I will transplant the seedlings into the garden, while also planting some seeds directly into the ground. I just harvested some delicious spinach that wintered over, and picked my first asparagus of the season, so all is not lost! The vegetable gardens are my inspiration for my Farm to Table Cooking Classes, which will be starting up soon, so stay tuned for those.

Tonight, Wednesday, May 14th at The Cinema Arts Centre in Huntington, there will be a screening of the documentary film, The Garden, which chronicles the struggle of gardeners in South L.A., to hold onto their 14 acre community garden. The garden was started as a form of healing, after the riots in 1992, and now it is being threatened by the City of LA and developers. Please join us and support our own local community garden. This event is a fund raiser for Gateway Community Garden and LI Community Agricultural Network.

This week, I am very excited to have as my guest on the Progressive Radio Network, Bryant Terry, the award winning chef, author and food activist. I invited him on to talk to us about his new book, Afro-Vegan, which is a cookbook Bryant-Terry-photo-credit-Margo-Moritz-680x835that celebrates the foods, flavors and traditions of the African and Caribbean people, while exploring the history and cultures that created these foods. As a food activist, Bryant recognizes that access to good, healthy, real, unprocessed food, should be a right and not a privilege, but that our broken, industrial food system does not support that belief. His work in educating the public to reclaim our food system and our traditions, supports the building of community, the growing of our food and the joys of cooking together. Please join me, this Thursday, as we hear from Bryant Terry.
