Take Action: Demand Meat Without Drugs, Support Healthy School Snacks, Don’t Frack Our Food!

Tell Trader Joe?s to Source Only Meat Raised Without Antibiotics.

The Consumers Union has researched the largest grocery store chains in the US to find out what kind of meats they?re selling that are raised without antibiotics, and they released their findings last year. This information helped them to determine TJ300which grocery store chains might be the most likely (and most capable) of only sourcing meat from suppliers that don?t routinely give their animals antibiotics. Trader Joe?s rose to the forefront for many reasons. First of all, the majority of the products they sell are under the Trader Joe?s brand name, meaning the company has a direct relationship with its suppliers and can make these kinds of demands. In fact, Trader Joe?s has already done so on many occasions? they already require that their Trader Joe?s branded products contain no artificial colors, preservatives or GMOs, and they require their eggs to come from cage-free chickens. Furthermore, Trader Joe?s already offers a decent selection of meat raised without antibiotics, so they have an opportunity to expand their sourcing from those no-antibiotics suppliers. Their competitor, Whole Foods, has a strict policy against selling meat raised with antibiotics in place for years ? so we know it can be done! Join the Consumers Union and take action now: tell Trader Joe?s to be the next industry leader and say goodbye to meat raised on antibiotics.

Tell USDA: I Support Healthy Options

Roughly 40 percent of students buy a snack at school each day. Even if students eat a healthy lunch, research shows they often still consume excess calories from side dishes their cafeteria might serve, such as french fries.? Right now, the U.S. Department of Agriculture is considering updated nutritional guidelines that would make sure schools sell healthy snacks and drinks to students. But we only have until April 9 to weigh in!? Tell the USDA you support these important guidelines.

?Don’t Frack Our Food and Farms!

You may not live in California, but chances are a lot of the food you buy, including organic produce, is grown there. California is the largest producer of food in the U.S. In 2011, the state’s 81,500 farms and ranches had sales of $43.5 billion. What happens to our food if we frack and poison the groundwater that irrigates California?s farms?? The U.S. Department of Interior?s Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has already auctioned off 1,750 square miles of California?s public lands to oil companies intent on fracking. In May, the BLM plans to auction off even more of California?s Monterey Shale, which is home to cattle ranches, dairy farms, vineyards and organic farms. We all depend on California for our food. California?s unique Mediterranean climate allows the state to grow over 450 different crops. Some of these crops are exclusive to California: almonds, artichokes, dates, figs, kiwifruit, olives, persimmons, pomegranates, pistachios, prunes, raisins, clovers, and walnuts. Fracking is bad for our water, bad for our air, bad for our health, bad for the climate. Without clean air and clean water, there are no farms. Without farms, there is no food.? Please sign this petition to the Bureau of Land Management asking officials there to stop auctioning off California?s public lands for fracking.
