November 6th is right around the corner! Now more than ever it is important to make sure you get to know the candidates in your state, city, and district. A great resource for finding out who the candidates are, and what the stand for is Vote 411. Another great resource for NYC residents is WNYC & Gothamist’s guide.

This is the time as citizens that we can have our voice heard, and vote people into office that will stand up for the issues we believe in. Vote so that you can see change in your communities!

For the Long Island Community, on October 30th Liuba Gretchen Shirley who is running for Congress in New York’s 2nd district is having a fundraiser in Westbury with Amy Schumer! Liuba Gretchen Shirley is just one of many new candidates vying for a spot in NYS congress!

Stop Amazon and Other Grocery stores from buying GMO Apples!

Currently, the Biotech Company Intrexon is looking to expand its production of its GMO apples. They are partnering with well known companies like Amazon, and other big name grocery store chains to sell their products. The problem with this is that GMO apples require more pesticides and are unnatural. The spread of production could contaminate organic and non-GMO apples, just by being close to them.

The Friends of the Earth organization explains why this specific type of apple is so bad for us:

The “Arctic Apple®” is completely unnecessary and purely cosmetic. It was engineered to not turn brown when cut. But there are non-GMO and organic non-browning apples that have been naturally bred — and browning can be prevented with lemon juice or another source of vitamin C.

These GMO apples are engineered using an experimental, new GMO technique called RNA interference. But scientific studies have found that genetic engineering techniques like this may result in genetic errors that could have consequences for people and the planet. This apple, whether sliced or dried, is genetically unpredictable, hasn’t been properly assessed and will not be labeled as a GMO.

We need to ask Amazon and big grocery stores to boycott these GMO apples! If big retails don’t work with them, there won’t be a bigger demand and they won’t be able to expand production!

Sign this letter to tell Amazon to NOT buy Intrexon’s GMO Apples!

People’s Climate March Voting for the Climate, Jobs and Justice!

In September, the People’s Climate Movement organized thousands of people across the country to raise awareness for Climate Change though the People’s Climate March. Their goal was to demand bold actions on climate, jobs, and justice. Those demands they believe will determine the future of our movement – and our world – for years to come. The march was a great step towards raising awareness and demanding change, but after the recent UN Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change’s dire report on the need for a change to help our future the People’s Climate Movement is moving towards a new goal: asking people to vote in November to support their goals of making a difference in climate, jobs and justice! They are asking people to:

Take the pledge today to vote for Climate, Jobs & Justice on November 6th!

They are asking people to volunteer to help the movement to get the vote out in their own communities across America.
