Take Action: Protect Babies from Nanoparticles! Tell the EPA to End our Plastic Waste Crisis!

Nanoparticles are particles are so tiny that they can change a substance’s entire structure. Because they’re so small (about 1/100,000th of the width of one human hair), nanoparticles have the potential to penetrate the blood-brain barrier and to be absorbed by the body more quickly. Many elements, like carbon, that are relatively stable in larger quantities become toxic when reduced to their nano size. Why they want to add these nanoparticles to baby formula and baby food in the first place, I do not know, but without proper testing, it should not be allowed!

Please sign the Center for Food Safety’s petition to U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) telling them to prohibit all engineered nanomaterials in infant formula until the formula is proven to be safe for infants to consume. As with many regulations in this country, we allow the company producing the product to tell us if it’s safe, without having a third party do the testing. The way the regulation goes, Gerber and Similac get to decide for themselves that their product is safe under the Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) rule that was originally intended for everyday ingredients such as salt.

Friends of the Earth commissioned the first-ever laboratory studies on the use of engineered nano materials in baby food sold in the U.S. and found nano-titanium dioxide to be one of three nano-sized structures causing concern. Friends of the Earth also found nano-silicon dioxide in infant formula, which has been shown to accumulate undissolved in the livers of mice and rats.
The study also found nano-hydroxyapatite in needle-like form in the baby formulas, which has been linked to cell death in the liver and kidneys of rats. The European Commission’s Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety advises even cosmetic companies against using nano-hydroxyapatite in cosmetics. If European science authorities are advising against a nanoparticle being used in European makeup, we shouldn’t be putting it in infant formula to feed babies here in the U.S.!

By the Year 2050, Scientists Predict there will Be More Plastic in the Ocean than Fish!

URGENT ACTION NEEDED:
We have all seen the photos of plastic waste piling up on our beaches and our oceans. Plastics don’t ever disappear. They are not biodegradable. They just keep breaking down into smaller pieces and eventually become so small that they pass through into our water and our food. Scientists agree that the average human being consumes a credit card worth of plastic every week.  Plastic pollution kills OVER A MILLION marine animals annually, including turtles, dolphins, whales, and seabirds. They either ingest the plastic or becoming entangled in them. Research even found that almost ALL BABY SEA TURTLES are born with plastic ALREADY in their stomachs!

Unfortunately, corporations care more about profits than caring for the earth, animals or people, so they won’t stop until there is a law demanding it.

PLEASE SIGN THE PETITION NOW!

Tell the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) to end the plastic pollution crisis.
