Packaging Food With Food Helps to Reduce Waste

“A growing number of entrepreneurs and researchers are working to turn foods like mushrooms, kelp, milk and tomato peels into edible — if not always palatable — replacements for plastics, coatings and other packaging materials.” – NY Times

Top Ten Foods You Can Grow From Kitchen Scraps

The best part about growing my own food is that I can control (mostly-sometimes the neighbors spray chemicals too!) and directly effect the quality of what I eat and feed to my family. Yes, growing from seed can be difficult and time consuming, but there are easier ways to supply yourself with cheap, organic food (especially, if you don’t have a yard). That is, you can actually regrow food from kitchen scraps using small containers and on countertops!! Check out this top ten list of crazy, easy and simple to grow varieties (these definitely aren’t going to feed a family, but in the least, they are inspiring and fun experiments to do with kids!).

Trump’s Split Administration Leads to Protectionism and Affirmation for Paris Climate Agreement

A U.N. panel of climate scientists says it is at least 95 percent probable that man-made greenhouse gas emissions — especially burning fossil fuels — are the main cause of climate change since 1950. “In each of the past three years, global average temperatures have hit record highs, and the continued warming of the planet is projected to cause worsening droughts, sea level rises, floods, heatwaves and extinctions of wildlife.” All of these largely impact our food system and the accessibility of basic needs to people around the globe.

Last week, the president (who has been quoted from his campaign trail calling global warming a hoax!) was pressured from other world leaders to honor the 2015 Paris Agreement in order to curb carbon emissions and though he staved off making any decision until Saturday, he finally agreed “to fight all forms of protectionism” and ‘committed to a rules-based international trade system‘.

This is good news for people across the globe and for those in agriculture whose work and livelihood is arguably one of the first to be impacted by the detrimental affects of climate change. YAY!

Scientists Say Something is Very Wrong with the Tomato

“In a paper published Thursday in the journal Science, a team of researchers say they analyzed the genetic code of nearly 400 varieties of tomatoes ― from the common red supermarket types to the funky heirlooms found in farmers markets. Led by Harry J. Klee, a professor of horticultural sciences at the University of Florida, the team found many of this generation’s tomatoes have lost key elements that make them taste, well, like a tomato.” – Huffington Post

Raw Veggies That You Might Give Your A Tingly Mouth

“People who are allergic to pollen are accustomed to runny eyes and sniffles this time of year. But some seasonal allergy sufferers have it worse: They can develop allergic reactions to common fruits and vegetables.” – NPR, the Salt
