In the News: U.S. Announces Auction for Wind-Energy Leases off of Long Island and New Jersey coasts!

The first approved Long Island Wind Farm is set to be built 14 miles off of the south shore of Long Island by Equinor, a Norwegian energy conglomerate, and the South Fork Wind Farm, off the coast of Rhode Island has also been approved.

Beginning on February 23rd, the federal government is holding the nation’s largest lease auction for six more wind-energy areas off the coasts of Long Island and New Jersey. These projects could power two million homes, and set New York on a trajectory of meeting the goals of the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, and the Biden administration’s aim for 30,000 megawatts nationwide by 2030.

Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-Glen Cove), a gubernatorial rival to Hochul, applauded the potential wins for the environment and labor, but added, “We need the federal government to help make these projects economically attractive so ratepayers are winners, too.” The cost of transitioning to wind power needs to be subsidized by the government, so the extra expense doesn’t fall on the consumer.
