The 2022 Dirty Dozen List is Here!

Every year, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) publishes their Dirty Dozen List, and their Clean Fifteen List, to help guide us in making informed decisions. The Dirty 12 is a list of the most contaminated produce items, and the products that you definitely want to avoid purchasing conventional. The “Clean 15” list, is the opposite. It’s a list of the produce items that are least contaminated, and ones that are not as important to purchase organic if you’re trying to keep the bill down. However, it’s important to remember that when you support organic, you are not only making a better choice for your body, but you are also making a better choice for the planet by supporting a farmer who is helping to mitigate the climate crisis we are all in.

How Mining Cryptocurrency Contributes to Global Warming!

I was under the impression that cryptocurrency was virtual, and saved energy and paper, because it didn’t need to be printed or stored. Man was I wrong!! It turns out that cryptocurrency uses half a percentage point of all the electricity used in the world, about the same amount as the entire country of Sweden!! I had no idea cryptocurrencies were so energy-intensive. In order to keep track of all the “virtual transactions” they need to be logged anonymously on a public ledger called the blockchain, which is maintained by a decentralized, sprawling network of computers. And to make sure all the transactions are legitimate, it requires massive amounts of computers to validate them, consuming gargantuan amounts of electricity. Currently, fossil fuels power about 60 percent of Bitcoin mining. It’s a climate change disaster!
