In the News: New York City Plans to Make Anti-Overdose Drugs Available for FREE through Vending Machines!

Naloxone is a medication used to reverse opioid overdoses, and it can save lives if administered soon after the overdose happens. The vending machines will be in neighborhoods especially hit hard by drug overdoses, and they will also distribute free syringes, toiletries and safe-sex kits.

During the past 2 years, since the Covid pandemic has disrupted our lives, overdoses have been on the rise. In 2020, there were 2,062 deaths in New York from overdosing, which is an increase of 500 from the year before, and New York is not the only city dealing with this problem. Overdoses across the country are on the rise.

“Overdose deaths in New York City are not equally distributed citywide, with some groups and neighborhoods disproportionately experiencing increases,” the nonprofit Fund for Public Health in New York said last month in a request for proposals from organizations interested in taking the lead on the project. The fund, which issued the request on behalf of the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, set a Jan. 20 deadline for proposals. The health department will award the contracts on Jan. 31.
