iEat Green Shares Interview with Brenda Sanders, Founder and Executive Director of Afro-Vegan Society!

Hi All,

I just finished my interview with Brenda Sanders, and came away with a feeling of awe and amazement at the work, accomplishments and changes one individual can make! Brenda is changing her community from the ground up, by engaging them in educational seminars, videos, cooking classes, workshops, and opportunities to learn about healthy eating, food related illnesses plaguing marginalized communities, and how to cook and eat plant based foods. She started with a community center in Baltimore, Thrive Baltimore, as a place to bring people together to learn about living a more sustainable life style. Out of that grew the Afro-Vegan Society, a nonprofit organization that could reach more people by providing online resources to people in marginalized communities to assist them in transitioning to veganism. Lastly, to meet the needs of the community, and to offer a place where people could purchase delicious plant based foods, Brenda opened The Greener Kitchen, a vegan deli and food distributor that produces plant-based foods that are both affordable and accessible.

This month, in celebration of Black History Month, the Afro-Vegan Society, is hosting a month long event called Veguary , a free campaign encouraging people to commit to vegan living during the month of February, while highlighting the many contributions of Black trailblazers, and the many benefits of vegan living. Everyday, during the month of Veguary, they will send out an email with a recipe, a cooking class, or an important video to watch. I suggest you sign up today!

In 2012, Vegan SoulFest was born, and has grown into an annual festival that celebrates culture and all aspects of vegan living. In 2019 they had over 13,000 people attend! Last years event was cancelled due to Covid, and they are waiting to see if they will be able to host another one this year.
