iEat Green Shares Interview with Adrienne Esposito, Executive Director of Citizen’s Campaign for the Environment

Hi All,

If you missed my interview today, you’ll want to listen to it below! My guest, Adrienne Esposito, is the Executive Director and co-founder of the Citizen’s Campaign for the Environment. She is very knowledgeable about so many environmental issues effecting New York, especially here on Long Island. We started our conversation about the unique process in which Long Islanders get their drinking water. Unlike most of the country, we don’t have a pristine reservoir that is protected from pollutants. Our drinking water comes from the layers of aquifers under the soil, where all of the toxic chemicals that we put onto our lawns and roadways, seeps down into the aquifers, along with the pharmaceuticals that everyone is flushing down the toilet. How can we protect ourselves? New York just passed a bill that requires pharmacies to offer a safe place to dispose of your unused drugs, along with police stations that are already providing that service. We still need to push for stricter laws, regulating the use of pesticides, and outlawing the use of high nitrogen fertilizers.

Then we moved the conversation to the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) and talked about all of the smart regulations that our current administration is trying to undo, The Clean Power Plan, The Clean Water Act, The Clean Air Act, Asbestos Removal, Fuel Efficiency goals, and the list goes on. Can our government really care so much about big business, that they have no regard for human health or the environment? It just does not make any sense! Then, of course we talked about moving away from fossil fuels and going towards renewable energy, like the wind farm off of the coast of Rhode Island. Hopefully we will see more wind farms popping up in the near future, even though our president is pushing for more gas and oil drilling off the coasts, instead of the clean alternative. We all need to make our voices heard, at every opportunity we get!
