iEat Green Shares Frustration Over the Cost of Health Insurance! Brenda Sanders, Founder and Executive Director of “Afro-Vegan Society” and Organizer of Veguary, Joins Bhavani on PRN!

Hi Everyone,

I am so frustrated looking for affordable health insurance. I’ve been on the NYS Open Enrollment Marketplace for hours, and every plan has huge deductibles and is expensive, even the bad plans! I don’t believe affordable health insurance exists in this country, and that is inexcusable! For an individual to spend between $700-$1,200 per month, for mediocre insurance that doesn’t even include alternative modalities, is ludicrous! Traditionally, I go to the doctors once a year for my annual check up. Occasionally, I might go twice, but I have never even come close to using up my annual deductible or out of pocket expense. To pay these extraordinary premiums does not make sense, yet the alternative of “no coverage” is out of the question.

Meanwhile, the average salary for a CEO of a health care company is 18 million, and 1 out of every 5 Americans has a medical debt that they are struggling to pay off. Something is clearly out of balance! We need to push for universal health coverage in this country, while at the same time creating policies that supports access to healthy food for everyone. Food related illnesses are the leading cause of death in this country, and they can be prevented and reversed with a healthy diet. Think of how much money could be saved if we were able to change the way people eat!
