iEat Green Partners with Slow Food North Shore for their Slow Food In School Program; Sign Up Today for Our Annual Thanksgiving Event; An Interview with Clara Lyles from Outstanding In The Field

Hi All,

It is so healing to be around children. I think we all need to find ways to integrate children into our lives. I know that is true for me. I’ve heard of doctors giving prescriptions for eating more fruits and vegetables. Maybe we can get them to give prescriptions for hanging out with more children? I think lots of people would benefit from it, including the children! As I get older, I find it more important than ever, to stop, take a breath and appreciate the moment. Children have a natural innocence and sense of wonder, and they can be a constant reminder, as to all of the magical moments in our life. For me, being around children is uplifting and refreshing. I was with 40 children this morning, as part of our Slow Food in School Program,IMG_4663 talking to them about where their food comes from, talking to them about pumpkins, about the hundreds of varieties of pumpkins, and about eating pumpkins. We talked about what other vegetables were orange, and how good they are for their bodies and for their eyes.  Then we served them Roasted Pumpkin Soup and the comments and expressions were priceless! I will look forward to going back there in the winter with some Roasted Winter Root Vegetables.

I am getting ready for my 21st year of bringing community together for a great cause, creating a Thanksgiving Feast for the Needy. Every year, I partner with the River Fund NY, and join their mobile food pantry at Rufus King Park in Jamaica, Queens, to serve a homemade, delicious traditional Thanksgiving Feast to those in need (including a vegetarian option, of course!). A huge part of this event, is our winter coat and clothing drive. There are many ways you can get involved. You can sign up to volunteer for the washing, prepping and cooking, you can donate a turkey (preferably cooked, but raw is OK too), you can donate money directly to the River Fund NY ( a 501c3 org., mention Thanksgiving event) and you can help us collect coats, and other winter clothing items to distribute to those in need. This week on the Progressive Radio Network, I will be interviewing Clara Lyle, the primary photographer and blog writer for Outstanding in the Field. Back in the summer of 1999, Jim Denevan came up with the idea of setting a long table on a farm and inviting the public to an open-air feast in celebration of the farmer and the gifts of the land. It would be a traveling feast with a central vision of farmers, chefs, cheese makers, ranchers, foragers and winemakerOutstanding in the Fielss in delicious communion with the people they sustain. He saw it as a terrific challenge, and as a mission. Since then, he has organized more than 600 Outstanding in the Field events, made twelve coast-to-coast tours of North America, visited all 50 of the United States and set their table in a total of ten countries. More than 80,000 people have come out to their events, to understand, learn from and celebrate the farmer. It sounds like a Slow Food event to me! Please join me on Thursday, as Clara shares with us, first hand, what it is like to be at all of these events, and what sets them apart from the others.
