Help Put an End To Single-Use Plastic in Grocery Stores!

Plastic is one of the worst pollutants in our world. We are bombarded everyday by single use plastic items, like bags, straws, and cups, just to name a few. These items are polluting our oceans, and affected our entire food chain. Also, in order to make these plastic bags we are using natural gas, which is extracted through drilling and is hurting our environment deeply. We need to remove our reliance on single-use plastic items and urge retailers to find other solutions and products to fill these gaps.

Businesses, local governments, and entire nations have taken actions to ban, limit, or place fees on single-use plastics. Recently, Kroger, the nation’s largest grocery chain, committed to phase out all single-use plastic products and go waste-free. We need Albertsons, the second largest chain and owner of stores such as, Safeway, Shaws, and ACME, to do the same. If big retailers get on board, companies will be forced to come up with real solutions to this problem!

Sign the petition today to end single-use plastic bags at Albertsons!

Oppose the Trump Administration’s Pro-Pollution Mercury Power Plant Proposal!

The Clean Air Act, and the Mercury and Air Toxics Standards Act are two environmental protection acts that help keep our air clean and avoid excess toxic chemicals to be allowed into the atmosphere. Right now, those basic protections are in jeopardy. The EPA Acting Administrator, Andrew Wheeler, is looking at eliminating the Mercury and Air Toxics Standards Act, which would be devastating for the environment. The Environmental Defense Fund wrote a great article, explaining the top five reasons that this would be extremely detrimental to our country. Coal-fired power plants, which would be the ones who’s standards would be rolled back, emit at least 85 hazardous air pollutants.

Some of these pollutants include:

  • Mercury, is a neurotoxin and causes brain damage in babies
  • Arsenic, which can cause cancer
  • Lead, which can damage children’s developing nervous system
  • Chromium and nickel, which cause cancer
  • Acid gases, which cause serious lung disease

The proposal would allow the US to burn even more fossil fuels, adding to the climate change crisis. To read more about the proposed weakening of these standards, check out this NY Times article. It is important to make our voices heard, and that is why we all need to vote! We need to strengthen our environmental standards, not weaken them! Clean Air and Clean Water are rights we can not take for granted!
