An Interview with Tim West – Chef, Writer, and Co-Founder of Food Hackathon

Hi Everybody,

This past weekend, thousands of people joined the Cowboy and Indian Alliance and 350.org. in Washington, to protest the Keystone XL Pipeline. As I’m sure most of you know, this issue has been in the forefront of the environmental crisis, because this pipeline threatens to contaminate the drinking water for over 5 million people and will effect the agricultural region that feeds most of this country. President Obama has postponed a decision again, delaying putting this issue to rest. Please keep up the pressure, and join the movement to keep the Tars Sands Keystone XL Pipeline from our country!

On a happier note, if you live on Long Island, it is Long Island Restaurant Week, now through May 4th, so check out the restaurants offering prix-fixe lunches and dinners, and remember to ask them if their fish is wild, and where their meat comes from. We can all do our part in letting restauranteurs know that we care about the foods we eat, and we want them to serve meat and poultry that is raised without the use of hormones or antibiotics, and where the animals have access to the outdoors. Also, check out the vegetarian options! If we all cut down on the meat, poultry and dairy we eat, we will be making a huge impact on greenhouse gas emissions! Bon Appetit!

This Thursday, my guest on the Progressive Radio Network is Tim West, one of the chefs who has been recognized by Zagat’s as one of their “30 under 30” chefs. Tim was responsible for starting the first Slow Food chapter at Culinary Institute of Screen Shot 2014-04-29 at 6.32.54 PMAmerica, and went on to working at the St. Regis Hotel in NY, before moving out to California to become the chef at the Facebook Headquarters. His experience at Facebook showed him how he could merge his passion for sustainable food with technology entrepreneurship, to help change our food system for the better. In 2013, Tim co-created Food Hackathon, a coming together of chefs, entrepreneurs, social media people, food producers, investors and foodies, to brainstorm, cross-pollinate ideas, and spark innovation in the eco-food system. The Food Hackathon model is being replicated this weekend in Washington DC and in two weeks in Germany. And this is just the beginning! Please join me on Thursday at 10am, to learn more about the Food Hackathon movement, and what innovations have been sparked, and what Tim is working on now!
