‘If You Can Grow It Here Then You Can Grow It Anywhere’ is the tagline for this year’s New York City Agriculture and Technology week, hosted by sponsors across the city. Through a dynamic series of fun and interesting events, general attendees will be given the opportunity to see and hear from young and mature entrepreneurs, as well as community leaders, about current projects developing around the intersection of urban farming and technology. Some of the topics include food security, environmental remediation, social justice, and economic viability. The schedule can be viewed online here, as well as a list of panelists and speakers including Yemi Amu, my PRN guest whom I interviewed last week!

Kellogg Co. Recalls Eggo Waffles After Routine Test Shows Listeriawaffle-84422_960_720

Earlier this week 10,000 cases of Eggo waffles (Nutri-Grain Whole Wheat flavor) were recalled, and thankfully, as of Monday, there have been no reports of illness. However, this one incidence might serve as a reminder of the importance of buying and cooking whole, fresh, local, and when possible, organic food!!! Packaged goods tend to have a milieu of ingredients that are mysterious, potentially harmful and often unnecessary to maintaining a healthy and well-balanced diet.

13th Annual Dumpling Festival To Benefit Food Bank For New York City

dumplingdough-592319_960_720Since 2004, Chef One Corp., a giant food manufacturer based in Brooklyn, has been encouraging people to make-their-own and cook, by hosting the NYC Dumpling Festival! More notably is its famous Dumpling Eating contest which has, for the past twelve years, been a way to give back to the community. That is, 100% of all the proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to Food Bank For New York City, which has served for over 30 years as the city’s major hunger-relief organization, working to end food poverty in the five boroughs. General admission into the event is free, however, a tasting ticket can be purchased for $20. Ticket holders are entitled to four tastings at participating booths and entry into the “Dumpling Eating Contest”, of which the grand prize is $2,000! See iEat Green events here for more details.
