A Bold New Law Addresses Food Insecurity and Food Waste at the Same Time!
This past December, a bill was signed into law that requires all supermarkets and grocery stores to donate any leftover or surplus food to non-profit or religious organizations such as food banks, pantries, or soup kitchens, that provide free food to the hungry. Of course the food must be safe for consumption, but it is either surplus, has some appearance or labeling issues, or is nearing it’s expiration date. This is a great law, because it not only addresses the huge problem of food insecurity, but it also addresses the problem of food waste and keeps the excess food out of the landfills.
More than 50 million Americans are struggling with food insecurity, while at the same time, Americans throw out between 30 and 40 percent of all food grown. Addressing both of these problems in the same bill, is a win/win situation that is long over due!!
Now is the Time to Plan your Garden and Order Your Organic Seeds!
As Spring approaches, it is time to wake up our gardens and get ready for planting! I wanted to share some of my favorite resources with you all, for ordering seeds, compost, worm castings, red squiggles, drip irrigation, etc. This is just a partial list. Many organic farms also will sell seedlings in the spring, which is also an option to get you started.
It’s important to know what planting zone you are in, so you can start some of your seeds indoors if necessary.
