Take Action: Attend the Only NY Port Ambrose LNG Public Hearing, Help Overturn Citizens United, How L’Oreal Can Prevent Cancer

LNG port

Port Ambrose is a liquefied natural gas (LNG) marine port proposed for the ocean off Long Beach/Jones Beach/Rockaways, in the same location where a wind farm is proposed. Liquefied natural gas is natural gas that has been super-chilled to -260 degrees, reducing it to 1/600th its original volume so it can be shipped in tankers.

Methane (shale gas) is 86 times worse for climate than carbon dioxide, and LNG increases that damage by 40%, due to the massive carbon footprint required to liquefy, transport and re-gasify the methane.? Tankers would deliver gas into a new proposed undersea pipeline, using two buoys that would constantly scrape the ocean floor, erasing the marine ecosystem in that area.

The builders propose to transport LNG from export terminals (yet to be built) in the Gulf Coast (using gas that will primarily originate in Pennsylvania), drive it up the east coast, and re-gasify it offshore. They claim this would ease heating costs for Long Island customers, but LNG is far more expensive than local gas, and pipelines already exist to deliver Pennsylvania gas to Long Island. The absurdity of the project is highlighted by the fact that LIPA recently killed a proposed gas power plant, stating they could supply the small amount of additional power required with solar projects instead.

Governors Cuomo and Christie have the authority to veto this project. It?s up to us to make sure they both do the right thing and protect our public health.

Please attend this hearing TONIGHT! For more info about transport or about the project itself, please visit this link:

Tell Congress We Have a Voice

action-180

The domination of politics by corporations and the mega-rich is a profound threat to democracy and freedom in the United States, and we have to fight back.? January 21 is the five year anniversary of the Citizens United, and dozens of pro-democracy groups are banding together to launch a major offensive against money in politics.? An overwhelming majority of Americans oppose the toxic influence of money in politics, and we have enormous momentum in the fight to overturn Citizens United.

Last year, a majority of senators cast a historic vote in favor of on a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United. And although the amendment didn’t received the needed 67 votes to pass, we now know who is on record in favor of letting big money buy our elections.

At the state and local level, we’re already winning major victories. Sixteen states and roughly 600 communities have formally demanded that Congress vote to pass a constitutional amendment making it clear that corporations are not people and money is not speech.

Reduce Your Daily Exposure to Carcinogens

LOREAL_cancer_180

L’Oreal, the multinational cosmetic conglomerate, promotes its contribution to fight against ovarian cancer while simultaneously selling products that contain toxic chemicals linked to cancer.? L’Oreal needs to get the message that it’s time to remove carcinogens from its products.? Safer alternatives exist for what’s carcinogenic in their makeups.? If an industry leader like L’Oreal makes the shift to become carcinogenic-free, it will help move the rest of the industry to make the same safe decision, removing a huge source of daily exposure to cancer-causing chemicals.
