iEat Green’s Interview with Farmer Lucy Marston from Hawthorne Valley Farm

Hi Everyone,

Yesterday I had an awesome interview with Lucy Marston, who is a biodynamic farmer at the Hawthorne Valley Farm in the Hudson Valley. Lucy is responsible for growing all of the farms production for 300 CSA (community supported agriculture) members, 5 Farmers Markets in NYC, and the Farm Store, located on the 400 acre farm. We spent a lot of our time talking about biodynamics, and what sets biodynamics apart from organic. The first thing she mentioned, was that a biodynamic farm is a three fold approach to agriculture, spiritual, ethical and ecological. They raise 60 cows, and use the manure and their own Unknown-1compost to amend the soil. They don’t bring anything in from the outside. They also use biodynamic preparations (think homeopathy for soil,) to infuse the soil with life forces to help fertilize the plants. The cycles of the moon and the stars are used to enhance the growing process, and inform the best time for planting and harvesting. When you put all of this knowledge together, what happens on the farm is magical! If you missed our interview, you can have a listen below!
