iEat Green Interviews Edward Mukiibi, Slow Food International’s Vice President

Hi All,

Yesterday I had a great interview with Edward Mukiibi, the young Vice President of Slow Food International. He was here visiting Slow Food USA, and touring some of our urban farms and cities struggling with food issues around equal access and food sovereignty. It’s hard to imagine that we, the richest country in the world, have people who are hungry and don’t have access to good, clean and affordable food. As of 2014, 48.1 million Americans lived in food insecure households, including 32.8 million adults and 15.3 million children. The cheapest food, is usually the least healthy, and adds to the obesity and diabetes IMG_0042epidemic in this country. In Uganda, most of the food is produced locally on family farms, but the farmer has to compete with cheap, imported food, from factory farms, which is hurting their local economy. They are also fighting the government, in regards to land grabbing and mono crop production, which is having a negative impact on the environment. As Vice President of Slow Food International, Edward is mobilizing local residents to take up farming, and to move the Slow Food International’s campaign “10,000 Gardens in Africa Project” forward. If you missed our interview, you can listen to it here!
