An Interview with Margaret Gray, Author of “Labor and the Locavore: The Making of a Comprehensive Food Ethic”

Hi All,

This morning I had the pleasure of talking with Maggie Gray, about her new book, Labor and the Locavore, which is a book about the farmworkers who grow much of our food, grown in the Hudson Valley. The story Maggie sheds light on is not only particular to the Hudson Valley region, but it is the story of the marginalized farmworker across this country. It is the part of the Good Food Movement story that is usually left out of the conversation, but thanks to Ms. Gray, it is now in front of us. The question is, What will we do with this new information? ?9780520276697

The issue is that most of the farmworkers that Maggie interviewed, were undocumented immigrants, and were faced with long working hours, no over time pay, no days off, and no breaks, not even lunch, and yet, they felt indebted to their employers and were too afraid to ask for a raise or better living conditions, with fear of losing their jobs or being turned in to immigration.

The book also ties the systemic problems in our food system to the price of cheap food, and the struggle that farmers have in making a living. It is a great book, and one worth reading.

If you missed the interview, you can listen to it below.
