Take Action: Stop Hochul’s Push to Expand Nuclear Energy!

Stop Hochul’s Push to Expand Nuclear Energy!

Governor Hochul is ignoring the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act that was voted into law back in 2019. That law set out to address climate change and to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by 70% by 2030, by shifting us away from fossil fuels to sustainable energy, like geothermal, wind, solar and long duration battery storage.
Nuclear energy is NOT SUSTAINABLE!!

Please write to Governor Hochul and tell her to abandon her plans to build another nuclear power plant in NYS.

Below is the letter I sent to her;

Dear Governor Hochul,
Your plan to build a new nuclear power plant is ignoring the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act that was voted into law back in 2019. That law set out to address climate change and to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by 70% by 2030, by shifting us away from fossil fuels to sustainable energy, like geothermal, wind, solar and long duration battery storage.
Nuclear energy is NOT SUSTAINABLE!!
Below are several arguments as to why nuclear energy is a mistake.
Nuclear power is more expensive and is a slower option compared to renewables like wind and solar. Nuclear projects have been plagued by significant delays and cost overruns. Studies suggest replacing nuclear energy with renewables could actually save the state billions of dollars.
The safety and environmental risks are great! The potential risks associated with nuclear power, including the possibility of accidents, the long-term storage of radioactive waste, and the potential for radioactive contamination of water resources, are all risks with dire outcomes. Just look at past incidents like the Fukushima disaster as evidence of these dangers. The difficulty of finding a permanent solution for nuclear waste disposal is another key concern.
Instead of investing in nuclear energy, New York should focus on accelerating the development of renewable sources like solar and wind. These options are not only cleaner and safer but also more affordable and faster to deploy. New York has ambitious goals for achieving a high percentage of renewable energy, and I believe that pursuing nuclear energy will distract from achieving those goals.
Also, historically, nuclear energy facilities have disproportionately impacted Indigenous communities and other vulnerable populations. Where will this nuclear power plant be located? In your neighborhood perhaps?
We need to prioritize investing in proven and truly renewable energy technologies. Nuclear power poses unnecessary risks and economic burdens while diverting resources from a more sustainable and equitable energy future for New York.
Nuclear energy plants are also targets for terrorism, and we do not want that in our communities.

Thank you,
