In The News: Trump’s UN Speech Debunked

File:United Nations General Assembly Hall (3).jpgAs many of you know, this week was Climate Week in NYC and leaders from around the world were welcomed to share their thoughts and plans for the future of the global climate. When it comes to Trump’s hour long speech at the UN General Assembly, it’s horrendous the amount of false information he shared.

The fact that he continues to call global warming a “scam” and a “hoax” is just outrageous. There is an overwhelming amount of scientific evidence and consensus from scientists worldwide that climate change is real and caused by human activity. We do not have leadership that believes in making real changes to help improve our climate and we are big trouble.

Trump went on to tout the benefits of coal use over renewable energy sources. He calls it “clean, beautiful coal”. Meanwhile, scientists have proven that coal creates greenhouse gases which are contributing to global warming, as well as increasing the risk of respiratory illness and lung diseases. Coal is anything but clean and beautiful.

File:Wind generation by country.svgTrump is notorious for placing blame and talking down about other countries. This speech was no different. He scrutinized China for being a leader in wind turbine sales, but claimed they have very few wind farms themselves. Not surprisingly, this is also completely untrue. China ranks first in the number of wind turbines in use, which is 44% of the global total and nearly triple the capacity of the U.S. (see the graph to the right).

Trumps attack on wind turbine use did not stop at his false claims against China. He claimed that wind energy is the most expensive energy that exists and calls it a “joke”. The truth is that 91% of the new renewable power projects commissioned in 2024 were more cost-effective than any fossil fuel-fired alternative, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). In fact, many of the states with the highest percentage of wind and solar generation, like Iowa, the Dakotas, Kansas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico, have among the lowest electricity prices in the country.

This spreading of false information and lack of respectful and intelligent communication make Trump one of the most infamous leaders of our time.
