September 17: Long Island Network for Change Presents ‘What You Need to Know About LI Water’

A Community Discussion:

What You Should Know About Your Drinking Water and What You Can Do

Sarah Meyland, Director of the Center for Water Resources Management at the New York Institute of Technology and a leader at Water for Long Island along with Charlie Bevington of the Sierra Club Long Island Group will present critical information about Long Island’s ground water and issues affecting the quality and safety of the water we drink.

Topics that will be covered include:

  • How the Groundwater System Works
  • Water Quality and Quantity Issues
  • Where Water Goes After It Goes Down the Drain
  • Chemicals of Concern In Our Water
  • Superfund Sites
  • How to Get Communities and Citizens Engaged to Improve Water Conditions

     When: Sunday, September 17th at 3:00 p.m.

    Where: Temple Beth El, 660 Park Avenue in Huntington.  

    Cost: Free

    Solutions and Community Projects will be presented, along with the opportunity for an audience discussion.

    Suffolk County Legislator Dr. William Spencer will be attending along with representatives of Long Island environmental action groups who will present exhibits and address questions and concerns affecting every Long Islander. Healthy, organic foods and snacks will also be available for attendees to sample and enjoy.

    Sarah J. Meyland, J.D., is a water specialist with a background in groundwater protection, water resources management, and environmental law. She is an associate professor in the Department of Environmental Technology and Sustainability, NYIT School of Engineering and Computing Sciences. Meyland has worked as the co-executive director of the NYS Legislative Commission on Water Resource Needs of Long Island. She was the watershed director for the Suffolk County Water Authority, and the program coordinator for the Nassau County Planning Federation. Meyland also served as executive director of Citizens Campaign for the Environment, a not-for-profit organization.

    Charles Bevington, Ed.D., a Sierra Club member since 2003, Water Monitor for two years and Sierra Club Long Island Group Legislative Chair since 2016; Rocky Point Civic Association since 2012 (President and Trustee).

    The Long Island Network for Change (LINC) is a grassroots group of concerned citizens whose mission is to be a force for social, racial, economic and environmental justice through personal engagement, education and political action.
