Eating Green with Bhavani: It’s Hard to Stay Optimistic and Hopeful, but WE MUST!!! What happened to the pleasure of eating together?

Hi All,

While one of our NY Representatives (D-Suozzi) voted across political lines to support more funding for DHS and ICE, our NY Senator (D-Gillibrand) is supporting a bill to help farmers and other agricultural producers transition to organic practices.  That’s the kind of leadership I’m going to support!!

File:2026 Federal Agents in Minneapolis, Minnesota after Portland Avenue and 34th Street shooting in January.jpgIt’s hard to recognize our country when you see photos like this and hear of federal agents shooting American citizens in the streets, and yet our Democratic Representative voted to support them! I am so disgusted with Tom Suozzi, we need to vote him out!! It doesn’t matter that he admitted to making a mistake days later when he heard from thousands of angry constituents, what matters is that his heart is on the wrong side of what is going on. We are watching our country become an authoritarian regime, run by a sociopathic, narcissistic, mad man, and our politicians are lining up to follow him. Thankfully, we can have a little hope when we see a democrat win in a special election in Texas, where Republicans have won in the past!

Meanwhile, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) joined 14 lawmakers in support of the Opportunities in Organic Act, a piece of legislation designed to help farmers and other agricultural producers transition to organic practices and build successful and sustainable businesses. It would help to promote sustainable farming and help eliminate the steep barriers that farmers face when transitioning to organic methods. We need more politicians committed to improving our country, not ruining it for their own political and financial gain.

What happened to the pleasure of eating together?

Has our society shrunk so low that the idea of eating is a waste of time? As a person committed to the Slow Food Movement, I recognize all the benefits from growing food without chemicals, cooking delicious meals and bringing family and friends together around the table.

This NY Times article explores the surge of aspirationally branded meal-replacement products—like drinkable salads, nutrition shakes, bars, and dehydrated meals—aimed largely at overwhelmed, health-conscious millennials. Unlike earlier utilitarian options such as Soylent, these newer products emphasize balance, fiber, and “whole nutrition,” pairing wellness language with sleek, Instagram-friendly aesthetics. Brands like Liquid+, Huel, Ka’Chava, and ABC 360 market convenience not as survival, but as a lifestyle upgrade: a way to save time, reduce mental load, and still feel virtuous about nutrition. Social media plays a major role, with founders and influencers using humor, digestion talk, and personal routines to make these products feel approachable and even fun.

File:Huel powder black edition shaker.jpgThe trend reflects broader cultural shifts, including waning protein obsession, growing interest in fiber and micronutrients, and the rise of GLP-1 weight-loss drugs that suppress appetite. While Soylent’s growth has slowed amid financial and cultural headwinds, competitors like Huel and Liquid+ are expanding rapidly through retail partnerships and viral marketing. Consumers describe these products as a relief from decision fatigue and consumer excess, even framing them as quiet rebellion against food culture overload. Dietitians note that while meal replacements aren’t ideal substitutes for whole foods, they can be a pragmatic option—especially if the alternative is skipping vegetables or meals altogether

There are many ways of simplifying your meal prep time, while still eating healthy, balanced meals. The idea of drinking or rehydrating a meal is mind baffling to me! Not to mention the concentration of all of the pesticides and herbicides in that food! If you’re one of the lovers of food pouches, I beg you to reconsider what you are missing!!
