iEat Green: An Interview with Carl Safina

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of talking with Carl Safina, the Founder of the Blue Ocean Institute, about the sustainability of fishing, and the environmental impact it has on our future. I asked him what sustainable means to him, because it seems to have a different meaning to everyone, and he said it is something that you can continue doing forever. In relation to fish, that means that they are being caught with methods that don’t harm the habitat that the fish need to live in, and at a rate that doesn’t deplete the population numbers of that fish, and also does not kill other, not targeted, animals at a rate that will wipe them out. Unfortunately, most fishing that is done these days, is not sustainable, but using the Blue Ocean Institute’s Sustainable Seafood Guide can help you make responsible choices.
