What is Solar Geoengineering?

When I hear “solar”, I automatically think it is something good for the planet and a green alternative. That is not the case when it comes to  solar geoengineering. Solar Geoengineering is the manipulation of the atmosphere by spraying sulphur and altering cloud cover in order to reduce the negative effects of burning fossil fuels.

Friends of the Earth recently emailed me to let me know that my member of Congress sits on a key committee that can stop our tax dollars from supporting solar geoengineering. This is something that I feel quite strongly about especially because it can impact our food supply. The pursuit of solar geoengineering by means of spraying sulfur into the atmosphere or by altering cloud cover can lead to a major disruption in weather patterns which threatens farmers and their crops that depend on regular rain. It is vital that we do not toy with such a precious element of the natural state of the Earth.

The billionaires funding research don’t want to face the fact that the burning of fossil fuels is wreaking havoc on our climate systems. And even though we have clear solutions to the climate crisis including renewable energy sources, they continue to pour money into fighting climate change in a way that allows them to continue lining their pockets with fossil fuel profits.

We all need to urgently reach out to our members of Congress to urge them to put a stop to the funding of solar geoengineering and help keep the triumph of renewable energy alive.
