UN Declaration to Combat Superbugs; FDA Begins Public Process to Redefine Healthy on Food Labels; Climate Change Math is Scarier than We Thought!

UN Declaration to Combat Superbugs

In a general assembly held last week, only the fourth of its kind to focus on a high-level health issue, the un-516083__340United Nations convened to address what the secretary general calls, the “fundamental threat” of drug-resistance bacteria, or suberbugs!!! Health professionals, even economists, along with the World Health Organization and the Center for Disease Control, have been issuing dire warnings that the increased risk of antimicrobial resistant bacteria (AMR) is going to cost many people their lives (in addition to billions of dollars). Visit my page to learn more about what you can do to take action and combat the proliferation of antibiotic resistance.

FDA Begins Public Process to Redefine Healthy on Food Labels

The Federal Drug Administration announced last week that it would begin a public process to redefine “healthy” nutrient content claims on food labels. It makes sense, since our relationship to food (and our understanding of nutrition) continues to evolve. Nutrition fact labels and health claims on packaged foods needs to reflect the accuracy of more recently published public health recommendations. One unfortunate and infamous example of product marketing information shaping consumer’s perceptions hass-avocado-945418_1280and misleading us to develop poor eating habits, is the fat-free diet trend, which had weight-watchers cutting every kind of fat, including the most healthy (and delicious!) Omega-3 fats found in avocados, nuts, seeds, and some kinds of fish (known now as vital to brain and endocrine function). Take my advice and that of many health professionals and food nutrition experts, that when shopping at your local grocery store, steer clear of the plastic and packaged foods, and instead fill up with whole, fresh veggies and fruit!

Climate Change Math Is Scarier Than Any Trick You’ll See this Halloween, and it’s True!

earth-1023859__340Check out Bill McKibbens article on Climate Change! It’s really scary, and we need everyone to stay vigilant in holding our country to the agreement it made at the Paris Climate Talks. Last week, in their comprehensive efforts to address global health and safety, the UN general assembly convened to formally sign and bind the Paris Climate agreement which should all ‘go into force’ by the end of the year. Though there are no sanctions that would require countries to submit policy changes other than voluntary proposals to be published online, the meeting did have 60 countries make public pledges to follow through on cutting emissions and investments in renewable energy.
