Today at 10am, Bhavani Joins Brian Lehrer on NRP to Talk About School Food! Stephen Ritz’s Inspiring Book! Is All Organic Milk Created Equal? Darina Allen, Host of LitFest 2017 Joins Bhavani on PRN!

Hi All,

Exciting news! I will be on the Brian Lehrer show this morning at 10am, talking about school lunches, and whether it is possible, for just a little over $1.00 per day, to make school lunches taste good and be healthy at the same time. Please tune in at 93.9 fm, for a lively discussion!

Last night I got to see one of my true heroes, Stephen Ritz of the Green Bronx Machine, at the launch party for his new book, The Power of a Plant. It was a lovely reception at Project Farmhouse, a new venue for foodie events at
76 East 13th Street in Manhattan, with lots of old and new friends, all trying to make the world a better place for our kids.

An interesting article I want to make sure you all see was in the Washington Post on Monday, talking about the lack of inspection when it comes to organic dairy farms. It was hard to believe what I was reading! The USDA does not hire their own inspectors to certify the organic standards being practiced in a particular farm, instead, farms are allowed to hire their own inspectors, and the USDA checks those reports every 2-3 years! I think it would be a safe assumption to assume the same lack of inspection is taking place in other organic farming operations around the world. Therefore, it is essential that we all do our own research and not just trust the label, but look into the farm itself. The Cornucopia Institute does a great job at doing a lot of that research for us, especially when it comes to organic dairy, as does the Environmental Working Group and their dirty dozen list!  When you have a chance to speak up about the poor inspection standards, please do so. We need everyone’s help in demanding that the USDA do a better job!

Tomorrow, Darina Allen, from the Ballymaloe Cookery School, will be joining me on the Progressive Radio Network, to talk about hosting the 5th Annual Food & Drinks Literacy Festival in Ireland, or LitFest 2017, as it is fondly called. This event has become an important date on the international food festival calendar and this year will be held from May 19th to the 21st. Tickets to some of the hottest events are already sold out, so if you are considering going, purchase your tickets soon!
