The Science Behind Addictive Junk Food & An Interview with Mary Cleaver, Owner of The Cleaver Co.

Hi Everybody,

If you didn’t get a chance to see the article in the New York Times Magazine this past Sunday, on the “hyper-engineered, savagely marketed, addiction-creating battle for American stomach share”, then please read it here. It was a great article on the consciously structured manipulation that takes place in kitchen laboratories and corporate conference rooms across the nation. As one gentleman who worked for Frito-Lay for over 20 years said, “I feel so sorry for the public”, and he is so right! In this article they described the science behind finding the ‘bliss point’ that helped companies create the greatest amount of crave, whether it be the feel in the mouth, the right crunch, the sweetness (but not too sweet), basically the right science to create an addict. It is definitely worth reading!

On that note, New Yorkers have the opportunity to be the first state to mandate the labeling of GMO foods. We have a new grassroots campaign, working in conjunction with allies in the nationwide Coalition of States for GMO Labeling to get a mandatory GMO labeling law passed in NY State in 2013. We don’t need it to go to ballot, as in California, all we need is to get it passed by our Senators and Assemblymen. We have until June 2013, or else we will have to wait until 2014. That is why we need all of you to call your State Senators and Assemblymen, and tell them to re-introduce the Senate Bill S3908- NYS – GMO Labeling Bill. For more information, go to the GMO Free NY website.?? To find out who your Senator is, click here.? To find out who your Assemblyman is, click here

This week, my guest on the Progressive Radio Network, is a person who is creating that ‘bliss point’ using ingredients that tantalize the mouth and create the desire for more, while using only the highest quality of ingredients. Yes, I am talking about Mary Cleaver, owner of The Cleaver Company and The Green Table.? Mary is the “go-to person” for all the foodie events that happen in New York City. Her commitment to sustainable, seasonally-driven food that is raised humanely, has made her a leader in the Farm to Table movement, and an advocate for purchasing food from local purveyors. I am thrilled to have her join me on my show, and to share with us her passion for “real food.”

Remember, my show is recorded live, every Thursday, from 10-11 am, EST. If you want to call in during the show with any questions for me or my guest, the call in number is 888-874-4888.
