Take Action: President Obama: Keep Your Climate Promise, Water Filter Buying Guide, Not This Fracking Guy to Lead the Department of Energy, Bonnaroo Sponsors Plastic-Free Innovation

Tell President Obama to Deliver on His Climate Promise!

The State Department has just released its environmental review of the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline and, as we?d feared, the results are flawed. Despite the President?s talk on confronting climate change in his Sate of the Union speech, his State Department shrugged off the devastating climate impacts of a pipeline that would drive dramatic expansion of heavily-polluting tar sands development.. Tell President Obama to reject the State Department?s flawed assessment and send them back to the drawing board. Producing tar sands oil generates three times as much greenhouse gas pollution as regular crude oil production. Building the Keystone XL would be the same as putting at least five million new cars on the road! Downplaying the climate impacts of this added pollution is like ignoring the increased odds of getting lung cancer from smoking more cigarettes. The State Department is also aware that the corrosive properties of tar sands oil increases the likelihood of pipeline leaks and spills. In fact, the Keystone XL?s sister pipeline leaked more than 12 times in its first year of operation! But that?s not properly addressed in this new review either.? Urge the President to deliver on his climate promise by rejecting the State Department?s flawed review of the Keystone XL.

Tell President Obama: Don’t Appoint Fracking Proponent Dr. Ernest Moniz to Lead the Department of Energy

If President Obama is serious about confronting climate change, why is he considering appointing a major proponent of fracking to lead the Department of Energy? According to Reuters, President Obama has chosen for the job Dr. Ernest Moniz, the director of MIT’s Big Oil-sponsored Energy Institute and a big believer in expanding toxic, climate-heating gas fracking. Moniz’s Energy Institute at MIT is sponsored by the likes of BP, Chevron and Saudi Aramco. So it is no surprise that the gas industry and pro-fracking groups welcomed the rumor of Moniz’s appointment to head DOE. Moniz is a strong backer of the deeply flawed notion that we should expand our fracking infrastructure and development to serve as a “bridge” to low-carbon sources of energy. By publicly protesting his likely pick for Energy secretary, we be sending a message to the President that he is making a huge mistake.
