Tell Your Representative: Please Support the Saving America?s Pollinators Act

Despite objections of citizens and environmentalists, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently registered yet another pesticide known to be toxic to honeybees. In response to the mass bee die offs, the Saving America?s Pollinators Act (H.R. 2692) has been introduced. Unfortunately, it remains in committee, where it was sent in August 2013. The EPA has ignored all the evidence pointing to pesticides as the number one cause of Colony Collapse Disorder. Instead, on February 17, the EPA registered a pesticide called cyantraniliprole, which is being used on a variety of foods including leafy vegetables, milk, almonds, berries and onions. It?s clear that the EPA is more interested in protecting Dupont, Syngenta and other pesticide-makers, than it is on protecting the environment. Bees play a vital role in maintaining our food system. Without them, nearly a third of our food crops can?t survive. The Organic Consumers Association is working to convince retailers like Home Depot and Lowe?s to stop selling bee-killing pesticides and plants coated in neonicotinoids, a class of pesticides known to cause Colony Collapse Disorder. You can help by refusing to buy garden plants and pesticides from these stores. In the meantime, let?s work to get enough legislators on board with the Saving America?s Pollinators Act. Dunkin Donuts: Stop Using Styrofoam Cups and Switch to a More Eco-friendly Solution

Dunkin’ Donuts sells millions of cups of coffee each year and that means millions of pounds of trash. Unforunately, Dunkin Donuts uses one of the worst materials for their coffee cups – styrofoam.? The worst part is that is this only references consumption in the United States.?Worldwide, the amount of waste generated is astronomical.? What’s worse is what’s in that trash. Styrofoam in the environment poses a threat to all of us.?Styrofoam is resistant to photolysis, or the breaking down of materials by protons originating from a light source. This, combined with the fact that Styrofoam is lightweight and therefore floats, means that over time a great deal of polystyrene has accumulated along coasts and waterways around the world. It is now considered the main component of marine debris. On the Dunkin’ Donuts brands website, they state their claim of responsibility to the planet: ?”We recognize that everything we do has an impact on the environment. From the materials we use, to the way we construct and operate our stores, we are committed to adopting better, more sustainable approaches whenever possible.”?? It is time for them to get styrofoam out of their stores for good. Click here to sign the petition if you would also like to see Dunkin’ Donuts honor their pledge and ask them to adopt a better, more sustainable approach to serving their delicious coffee.

Don’t Let Monsanto’s GMOs Contaminate Organics!

Right now the U.S. Department of Agriculture is working with biotech lobbyists to finalize a plan so Monsanto?s GMO crops can contaminate organic and non-GMO shutterstock_58259482farmers crops at will. Even worse, the USDA?s new plan could force these farmers to pay for crop ?contamination? insurance to protect themselves against unwanted contamination by Monsanto?s patented genetically engineered genes. When Monsanto says ?coexistence?, what they really mean is: ?We will contaminate organics?. Despite claims by Monsanto and the USDA, nobody can overrule the laws of biology and dictate how plants reproduce. Patented GMO pollen is spread by wind, insects, birds and animals and no matter how much Monsanto denies it, their GMO crops will contaminate and destroy the integrity of farmers? organic and non-GMO crops. Even worse, if the USDA’s new AC21 guidelines are adopted, organic farmers may lose the right to sue Monsanto, DuPont, Syngenta and the biotech bullies for economic loses resulting from GMO contamination of their organic crops!
