Take Action: Stop the TPP; Tell Home Depot and Lowe’s to Stop Selling Bee-Killing Plants; Take the Pledge to End Food Waste

Stop the TPP

The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade deal could be up for a vote in Congress later this year, and we need 120px-Stop_TPP_Capitol_Hill_CC_img-636x310everyone to speak out against it. The deal would take away regulations that protect consumers, workers, the environment, free speech, and internet freedom. It seems that the TPP is setting up a system where corporations take precedence over people. According to the website ExposetheTPP.org, “the trade deal would ensure that a small percentage of the wealthy will prosper, while the rest of the population will see their finances dwindle even more. It would ban “Buy American” or “Buy Local” purchasing and marketing practices. It will allow Big Pharma to increase the price of medicine and will disallow the sale of many generic medications. It will override environmental protection laws and policies that have been put in place by member countries.” A lot is at stake, so we need as many people as possible to educate themselves about the TPP and speak out against it.

Tell Home Depot and Lowe’s to Stop Selling Bee-Killing Plants

We have written before about the dangers of the widely used pesticides neonicotinoids 120px-Shadehouse_2for bee populations. Home improvement stores like Home Depot and Lowe’s sell “bee friendly” plants that many consumers buy, thinking they are doing a good thing and creating habitats for bees. Unfortunately, these plants come to the store pre-treated with neonicotinoids, and are not labeled as such. This is not good for bees and other pollinators, and should not be allowed. Please sign and share this petition to spread the word that plants purchased at nationwide retailers are generally not bee-friendly. Purchase your seedlings and plants from local farms and greenhouses, and make sure to ask about neonicotinoid use!

Now that you’ve read about the issue through our newsletter, we’re asking you to take the next step. Take the pledge to do your part to end food waste. This includes things like planning your meals based on the ingredients you already have, freeze leftovers to use at a later date, or give away the leftovers, learn how to compost, use the proper storage containers, use older food first, and get creative with your ingredients. Educating ourselves on the issue isn’t enough. We all have to do our part to end food waste, so sign the pledge and share with your friends!
