Stop Deconstruction of the EPA; Help Protect Farm Workers; Protest the Veto of Farm to Food Bank Bill; Say NO to Chemicals in Our Food; Save the Bees and Support Organics

The EPA is Being Deconstructed Right Now

Trump campaigned on a promise to revoke much of Obama’s legacy, including regulations on climate change. He’s made good on that promise at the EPA by nominating Pruitt to head the agency, a man who has repeatedly dogged the EPA with lawsuits as Oklahoma’s Attorney General, and for many years has sided with oil and gas interests against environmental protections.

Steve Bannon, the president’s chief strategist and alt-right leader from Breitbart news, promised during a speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference last week, that there would be a “new political order.” His remarks actually made sense of the president’s nominees for agencies whose missions they openly oppose.

Clean air and water is necessary to produce clean, healthy food. Without understanding the inter-connectedness of these limited natural resources, we cannot become good stewards of the earth and our environment. Donate here to Food and Water Watch or here to the Climate Reality Project or find a local grassroots organization that feels right for you, and then help support them. We need to all stand up and protest the deconstruction of the EPA and other important administration agencies.

Help Protect Farm Workers by Donating to United Farm Workers

“According to researchers at University of California, Davis, approximately 70% of all the farm workers here who put food on America’s table are undocumented. The most recent set of orders the Department of Homeland Security released on Tuesday to increase immigration enforcement, puts almost all of the nation’s 11 million undocumented immigrants at risk of being deported. Understandably, workers are frightened and need to know what their rights are.” – UFW of America

Can you imagine what mass deportations would do to California alone? California’s economy depends on agriculture, a $54 billion industry. Plus, these people are our neighbors. They have lived here for years. They have families. There are 4 million children who were born in the USA, who have at least one undocumented parent. If their parents are deported, the children will become wards of the state. What will that do to our economy? They own homes and cars. They go to church with us. They pay taxes. Their kids are on our kids’ baseball teams. They are hardworking people and a vital part of our economy.

In this time of hate, it is more urgent than ever that we do outreach to farm workers. Can you help us do all the things that are necessary to reach farm workers and protect them? Donate here.

Urge Governor Cuomo to Sign the Farm to Food Bank Bill

Last week, I had the pleasure of interviewing Susan Zimet from The Hunger Action Network of New York State, a membership organization that has been instrumental in drafting and pushing through Congress the Food to Farm Bank bill. This bill gives farmers a tax incentive to donate their surplus and ‘not perfect’ produce to food banks, but Governor Cuomo vetoed it!

Some farmers already donate much of their “going to waste” produce, but this would help them cover the cost of getting the food to the food bank, while feeding hungry people at the same time! Many farmers have expressed that it costs them too much to donate food to the food banks, because of the associated costs of harvesting, packaging and transporting the produce to the food bank. This bill would help defray the costs, while keeping it out of a landfill.

So far, the bill has full support from Congress, but Governor Cuomo has vetoed the bill twice, and it is coming up for a third vote soon. Let’s send him a clear message! Please call the Governors office at 1-518-474-8390 or sign the petition in support of the Farm to Food Bank Bill!

Say NO to Toxic Chemicals in our Food

Ordinary people, legal aids, and environmental groups around the world, in the Netherlands, France and even Brazil (one of the world’s largest producers of GE crops with big investments in herbicidal use), are working hard to to ban harmful chemicals from their food system.

Learn about the toxic effects of Roundup (Glyphosate), which is used on hundreds to thousands of crops in the U.S., including corn, wheat, beans, and much more. Sign the petition here, and more importantly, spread the word about these toxic chemicals and resist monoculture and corporate agendas by buying Organic! You can join the movement in our fight for a clean, healthy food system, today!!

Visit the Organic Consumers Association here for information on how to help Save the Bees and to read more campaigns on how to take action during these difficult times!
