To all my vegan friends who are not drinking dairy, yet resort to other types of milk, I encourage you to read closely the list of ingredients in those boxed alternatives. Among them is (sometimes) carrageenan, a common food-additive that is harvested from specific seaweeds and used as an effective thickener/stabilizer in processed foods. Though there is a distinction made between undegraded (food-grade) carageenan and degraded carageenan (also known as poligeenan), various research groups in the past decade have investigated ‘the potential harm of consuming carrageenan’ regularly. In any case, I believe it is important to have more transparent regulatory methods and organic labeling-processes, because of the corporate powers and lobbying which goes on to keep scientific results hidden from consumers. I say to you, when consuming anything, organic comes first, but to uphold the integrity of what that label means for health and safety, we must voice our concern and sign the petition here to help keep our supermarkets and pantry shelves clean and cancer-free! Spread the word and raise awareness of these important issues among family and friends, and in the meantime, check out my homemade Almond-milk recipe to reduce your concerns as well as plastic-waste/packaging!

Give Kids Responsibly Raised Chickenhen-451984_1280

Tell the Secretary of Agriculture, Thomas J. Vilsack, to ‘combat the rise of antibiotic-resistant superbugs by expanding the USDA’s Foods Program to offer chicken that is raised responsibly’ (without routine doses of antibiotics!!!) to schools across the country. Schools with low budgets cannot afford the greener, cleaner chicken options, but if the USDA Food Program shifts and begins to buy that chicken, which is raised more responsibly, then kids will have healthier food on their plates! Sign the petition here and let us make the change together!

On November 10th, there will be an event hosted by the United for Action Team with a presentation by Sean Dixon, staff attorney of Riverkeeper, to discuss the issues of stormwater sewage and crude oil on the New York region. One of the major ecological impacts has been the decline of sturgeon as their spawning sites become increasingly polluted! Sign the petition here to notify the Fisheries Service and rally for real change now!

Stop Modern Day Native American Land Grabnative-land

Recently, in southeast Utah, after an unprecedented intertribal request was made to designate two million acres of indigenous people’s land as a national monument, Congress introduced a bill that would effectively strip down the proposed protection for these sacred sites and reservations. The bill would prevent the President from designating said land at Bears Ears, as a national monument for preservation and conservation, and ultimately, allow for ‘unspecified private interests,’ including oil drilling and uranium mining. Committee Democrats are highly concerned and working against this ‘modern day land grab,’ however, several Committee Republicans are rejecting their amendments and denying tribal leaders an opportunity to present their concerns. Sign the petition here to tell Congress NO MORE fracking and no more trampling over the people’s sovereignty! Get involved and let your representatives know that the proposal by Utah Rep. Bishop and Rep. Jason Chaffetz are absolutely intolerable, aimed only at pillaging natural resources from the earth without consideration of the past, present and future generations health and quality of life!
