Love and Honor at Dakota’s Camp; Future of Food and Farm; Chemicals Found in Our Food

Cooking is Alive and Well at the Standing Rock Indian Reservation

corn-1235895_1280A Navajo chef from Minnesota has made a new home at Standing Rock, as a Sioux tribe fights the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline. His name is Brian Yazzie and he is the chef de cuisine at The Sioux Chef, a Minneapolis-based catering and food education company whose mission is to revitalize Native American food culture, which was marginalized by centuries of colonization and forced assimilation. One of many individuals working tirelessly on and away from the site of protests, Yazzie is “using his platform and network to support the cause and spread awareness”.

Although most of the food available at first was dry, processed food, now they are getting donations of fresh produce and even frozen bison, which was given to the group by a nearby, local tribe. If you would like to make a donation here, I’m sure they can use whatever we’ve got to give!

The Trump Affects on Food and Farms

Well, after a relatively short period of a somewhat silent retreat (and shock) I believe many people across the globe are coming together as they brace themselves for our next White House administration. A question I’m sure many people are asking themselves is ‘How can I help?’ and I believe our answer is in the collaborative work we can do in our local agencies to represent all edges of society. There are some amazing food system, agriculture, and policy conferences happening across our nation and I feel my role in ‘iEat Green’ is to help my community stay abreast of them. Now, more than ever, I feel a duty to help the non profits in my community that are upholding my ideals. Tonight, I am providing food for the NYC Sierra Club’s Adventure Film Festival at the Sunshine Theater. Check it out!

Alarming Levels of Glyphosate Found in Popular American Foods

cereal-1444495_1280EcoWatch recently published an article confirming that glyphosate residues have been consistently found at much higher levels than expected in our foods, including cookies, crackers, and cereals—YIKES! Though the FDA does routinely test foods for other pesticide residues, it has never tested for glyphosate until this year (that’s right, WHAT?!) and now, the testing for glyphosate was suspended last week. Ugh.

“Frankly, such a high level of glyphosate contamination found in Cheerios, Doritos, Oreos and Stacy’s Pita Chips are alarming and should be a wake-up call for any parent trying to feed their children safe, healthy and non-toxic food,” Dave Murphy, executive director of Food Democracy Now!,” said.
