W.H.O. Report Links Some Cancers With Processed or Red Meat

Mutton_chopA report came out this week from the World Health Organization stating that consuming processed meats can lead to cancer. There was also some evidence that eating red meat, including beef, pork and lamb, can cause cancer in the colon, prostate or pancreas. Although this study (along with many others throughout the history of studying the effects of meat on the body) does not have enough credibility for the average person to believe that this could be possible. These studies are normally made to help make the dietary guidelines we all know so well. Let’s see if this study has any effect on the USDA in making their next Food Pyramid.

Soda Industry Fights to Cut Mexico’s Successful Soda TaxFountainSoda

In 2013, Mexico passed a law taxing high-sugar drinks, which is what we were trying to do here. Well the results are in and it’s very clear that they successfully thwarted Mexicans from purchasing sugar water. Since the law, purchase of these drinks have gone down 6% in the first year, and 12% in 2014. These may be low numbers, but it is still a huge victory. For those Americans who said the tax would do nothing to impact peoples food choices, they have been proven wrong. Of course, the soda industry doesn’t like this one bit, so they are lobbying to get the tax lowered by legislators, depending on how much sugar a drink contains.

Study Reveals Cheese is as Addictive as Drugs

Cheese_market_BaselYou wonder why you get cheese cravings all the time? You think you’re crazy right? Well, it’s been officially proven that cheese is just as addictive as drugs. So now when you say, “cheese is like crack,” you won’t be exaggerating. There is a study published in the U.S. National Library of Medicine, that examines why certain foods are more addictive than others. Cheese has an ingredient called casein, a protein found in all milk products. Casein releases opiates that play with your dopamine receptors which can trigger addictive behavior. You can take this quiz to see if you have a food addiction.
